Billykirk

"Brothers Chris and Kirk Bray have been producing leather goods for the last ten years. They launched Billykirk from Los Angeles in 1999, learning their craft from a third generation leather maker. A simple leather strap kick started the business, a decade later their collection has flourished into other offerings that consists of bags, belts, shoes, wallets, hats and other accessories. Since expanding and moving their operation to the East, they've employed a group of Amish leather makers to produce much of their line, while wrapping up production in their studio. We visited the brothers over the summer to observe their operation first hand and to discover the beauty behind the process."

Carts of Darkness

Run Time: 59:34

"Murray Siple's feature-length documentary follows a group of homeless men who have combined bottle picking with the extreme sport of racing shopping carts down the steep hills of North Vancouver. This subculture depicts street life as much more than the stereotypes portrayed in mainstream media. The film takes a deep look into the lives of the men who race carts, the adversity they face and the appeal of cart racing despite the risk. Shot in high-definition and featuring tracks from Black Mountain, Ladyhawk, Vetiver, Bison, and Alan Boyd of Little Sparta. "

El Chino

Run Time: 16:49

"Edgar Jimenez, aka El Chino, was a puny classmate of Pablo Escobar’s at Antioqueno Junior High School in Colombia back in the ‘60s. While Escobar used the ensuing years to become his generation’s greatest murderous narco superstar, El Chino slunk off to a dull life as a local wedding photographer. But after a chance reunion in the early ‘80s, Escobar recruited El Chino to become his personal picture taker, documenting his political campaigns, his private parties, and the various goings-on at Escobar’s outlandish 4,500-acre estate, Hacienda Napoles. El Chino spent the next decade in Escobar’s employ, enjoying total access and fussing over which of the drug lord’s associates was open to having his picture taken. This continued until the CIA, Los Pepes, Delta Force, Search Bloc, and a bunch of other people who wanted Escobar’s head on a platter converged to dismantle the Medellin Cartel. Recently Jimenez invited VBS to his home in the Aranjuez neighborhood of Medellin, where he let us rifle through his archives."

La Vida Loca

"In Central America they are referred to as 'the maras': modeling themselves on Los Angeles youth gangs, these groups are now spreading terror in El Salvador and further afield. 'La Vida Loca' is a study of a violent phenomenon that has been imported from the USA.

This violence is the result of a childhood at once terrifying and hateful. It is the hatred of those who have had everything taken away and have been given nothing back in return. It is the hatred of those who have never had anything. The hate born of exploitation, submission and daily humiliation. A hatred that is strangely captivating and embodies the disintegration of family life within Salvadorian society and the despair in which these young people have grown up.

'La Vida Loca' is what life is really about over there: youths who suffer, who defy us, who look down on us, who resent and dislike us. Though this vision of evil stirs up our fears and provokes nightmares, I also hope it shall invoke compassion and cause us to question our notion of the world. And so, like cornered dogs, this lost generation responds with pessimism, revolt and death.

A total lack of communication!

'La Vida Loca' is a documentary about absolute human solitude."

Sadly, the photographer and filmmaker of this documentary, Christian Poveda was gunned down while filming in El Salvador earlier this week.

"La Vida Loca" is set to hit select theaters later this month.
